The first generation Toyota Avensis with the factory index T220 was introduced in 1997, and in the model range of the manufacturer it replaced the Carina E. In the middle of 2000, the car underwent a planned modernization, after which it lasted on the conveyor until 2003 and acquired a follower.

The "first" Toyota Avensis is a representative of the D-class according to the European classification, which was offered in three body versions: a sedan, a five-door liftback and a station wagon.

Depending on the modification, the length of the car varies from 4520 to 4600 mm, the height is from 1425 to 1500 mm, the width and size of the wheelbase are unchanged in all cases - 1710 mm and 2630 mm, respectively. The curb weight of the 1st generation Toyota Avensis ranges from 1205 to 1245 kg.

For the original "Avensis" a wide range of power units was offered, consisting of gasoline and diesel units. The gasoline section is formed by a 1.6-liter engine with a potential of 110 horsepower and a return of 145 Nm of thrust, a 1.8-liter "aspirated", producing 129 forces and 170 Nm, as well as a 2.0-liter engine that generates 150 "horses" and 200 Nm.
There was also a 110-horsepower 2.0-liter turbodiesel producing 250 Nm of torque.
Motors were combined with "mechanics" for five steps or a 4-band "automatic", the drive is exclusively front.

At the heart of the "first" Avensis is the Toyota "T" bogie with an independent spring suspension with MacPherson struts in a circle. Disc brakes are used on each of the four wheels, supplemented by ventilation at the front. The steering gear of the model is equipped with a hydraulic booster.

The list of advantages of the 1st generation Toyota Avensis combines the overall reliability of the design, a roomy interior, efficient engines, acceptable fuel consumption, a comfortable suspension that provides excellent ride comfort, pleasant finishing materials and good equipment.

But there were also some drawbacks - this is not the best-in-class noise insulation, fuzzy gear shifting, in bad weather side windows and mirrors are thrown heavily, a small ground clearance.
